David Karp was born on July 6th,
1986, in New York. His parents are both American natives, and at the
young age of 11 Karp was already showing signs of success, developing
web sites for small businesses and learning HTML code. While that is
an achievement in itself, it didn't stop Karp from progressing
further in his talents. At the age of 15, Karp began homeschooling
full time in order to impress big named colleges through side
projects, but never returned to school. Opportunity arrived when a
family friend of theirs, Fred Seibert, allowed Karp to intern at his
animation studio. Through this experience, Karp was sought to help
with a technological flaw that would have taken a couple of days,
which Karp was able to finish within a couple of hours.
Knowing his talents, Karp left the
company and began his own consulting firm for computer programming
called Davidville. He obtained some work and developed a base, but it
wasn't until he found his own interest in tumblelogs that his career
would really take off. Karp began working on his own project in 2007
called Tumblr, a tumblelogging platform that gained 75,000 users in a
two week time frame. Tumblr today is know used by thousands as a
social media outlet to discuss a wide variety of things, between
food, movies, travel, and the general happenings of life. Karp
definitely harnessed his vision and took the first step
by starting up Tumblr because he took what interested him, and began
developing it into the successful company that it is today. I hope to
work in computer programming one day, and reading about David really
inspired me to take the first steps and really develop my ideas to
see if they can become something extraordinary like his is.
